Tomorrow it's more ethical hacking

Led by Mike Danseglio and Avril Salter there should be plenty of good stuff as we look more pratically at the means and ways in which hackers attempt to break into your network and how to see the signs and close the holes before they become a problem.  You android users should be aware that your devices are often used in a vulnerable way as reported by Symantec just a few months ago.  Just search on Symantec ISTR 2015 Report. The report shows that a remarkable 47% low sec risks apps exists in the android app store.  That doesnt mean they are vulnerable but are susceptible to malicious code.  But what is remarkable is that 17% of Android apps were in fact Malware.  That means you have a 17 in a 100 chance of downloading malware to your android device.  Many people discounted the Windows app store but the rigid security requirements apps must go through to be approved for the Windows Store has resulted in a much safer environment, but don't let me wax on about windows operating systems.  I have to get to work on an RFP thrown at me today that is due Thursday so enough of the chit chat.  Looking forward to configuring AD Certificate Services correctly to provide a bullet proof measure of keeping data both at rest and in transit, encrypted and secure.

Ethical Hacking Reconnaisance and Information Gathering

Important Note:  I nor SmartHome Integration, LLC endorce the use of ethical hacking of any network without the written consent of the owner or someone with executive oversite of budgeting and the contractual agreement between both the business or individual conducting an ethical hack and the customer, know that they could be one and the same.

So now that reiterating the obvious is over, lets talk hacking (ETHICALLY). Essentially using just a few utilities within your reach via download, you can gain valuable knowledge of just what social information is being broadcast from your networked devices including wirelessly, that could be used in social engineered attempts to lure information out of you.

Just to share the love since mac folks consider themselves so safe from hacks, did you know ...that Apples OSX10.10 and later MAC Computers have an UNPATCHED Zero Day Vulnerability!  But that's no surprise to most of the network community.

During our class we saw lot's of unprotected computers on a local major chain coffee shop.

With a few free utilities and some time reading up on the help documents and FAQs at these sites, you can gain valuable knowledge on how to know where your network weaknesses are and how to close those holes so information isn't stolen by cybercriminals.

As always use this information only in a manner that is honoring and ethical as you conduct yourself with the sensitive information available know as PII or PHI that you have the potential to discover.  Devise a plan on how you will deal with that encounter, i.e. Agree with the owner of the document what course of action should be used.  This could mean immediately handing it over to the owner or if designated, sister, mother, etc.  But this should be all written out and signed by both parties prior to conducting an ethical hack.  This could vary based on the nature of how the data is being audited.

AirPcap at http://wireShark.com  is a good place to start and http://insecure.org/nmap but only if you already know basic TCP command line utlities suchs as icponfig, nslookup, tracert, etc..

Where have I been?

Get-WhoCares should been the lead in line!! :). I'm having fun.  Beautiful weather here and they are feeding us well.  I almost took a picture of the spread but thought that might disclose to much personal information about me.  Ha Ha

Either studying like crazy to get up to speed in managing Azure Services from AADS to Web and SQL Azure.  Learning Powershell is key and I have a long ways to go.  But this week I'm in in Redmond, WA at the Microsoft Campus.  listening to Jeffrey Hicks run over the basics in PowerShell.  Really cleared up a lot of mystery for me by digging into why commandlets present themselves differently depending on what provider or application and how to use the help commandlet to really dig in to the crazy control we have in using this method and how easy it is to figure out if you just use simple command language.  Understanding how the aliases have made those command prompt commands work either in unix or dos fashion.  Lot's of cool tips and tricks.

SkyDrive will become OneDrive

Today we are pleased to announce that SkyDrive will soon become OneDrive.

OneDrive Logo

Why OneDrive? We know that increasingly you will have many devices in your life, but you really want only one place for your most important stuff. One place for all of your photos and videos. One place for all of your documents. One place that is seamlessly connected across all the devices you use. You want OneDrive for everything in your life.

Of course, changing the name of a product as loved as SkyDrive wasn’t easy. We believe the new OneDrive name conveys the value we can deliver for you and best represents our vision for the future. We are excited about what is to come, and can’t wait to share more.

For current users of either SkyDrive or SkyDrive Pro, you’re all set. The service will continue to operate as you expect and all of your content will be available on OneDrive and OneDrive for Business respectively as the new name is rolled out across the portfolio.

Expect to be able to experience the new OneDrive soon, and if you want to be one of the first to hear about it, let us know at OneDrive.com.

Microsoft News for nonprofits includes some HUGE discounts!

If you are a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit, non-governmental agency then you qualify for a variety of services, software and grants via either a direct subscription or grants to support such endeavors.  A list of available software, services, hardware and other opportunities can be found here [http://www.microsoft.com/about/corporatecitizenship/en-us/nonprofits/whats-available/].  See attached qualifications for US NA entities or this full link to determine your global [http://www.microsoftvolumelicensing.com/DocumentSearch.aspx] qualification.  There is an eligibility process that must be accomplished but the requirements are pretty simple if you are a 501(c)(3) non-profit.

For comparison; if you are currently an E3 (Enterprise 3 plan) user, you currently pay $20/month/user or $240/user/year.  Under the new non-profit licensing plan, the cost is only $4.50/month/user or $54/user/year!!  That's a whopping 77% savings from the regular enterprise-3 license.  You can also get options such as archiving, SharePoint storage for a greatly reduced price.  And all that with HIPAA BAA, FISMA ISO27001 and other compliant security built-in.

Microsoft's Popular Dynamics CRM can also be acquired at the very low price of $9.99 for qualified non profits.  https://crm.dynamics.com/en-us/offers/non-profit

There will be some free licenses available as well as some grants from Techsoup that you can apply for as well if you don't need the full E3 license in Office 365.

Have questions, feel free to reach out to your MS Partner for answers and directions.

Kindest Regards,

Week 2 with Nest

As both a new Nest Owner and Installer, I have a great compulsion to try everything and read everything concerning Nest.  I have learned that it is best to allow Nest to configure your schedule and not try to insert your own values.  I have been very impressed how Nest knew we were away even after only 30 minutes after we left the house.  Nest is very intuitive and WAF approved! (Wife Acceptability Factor)  The iPad and iPhone App are great, with a lot of control functionality.  The Windows Phone app (WPNEST from the Windows Store) is pretty basic only allowing you to change the temp and set away or home settings and set it to cool or heat mode.  But what else do you need to do when you are not at home and just want to set the temp in preperation for coming back home when an unexpected event takes you out of the house.  It's also great for the lazy in me to just pull out my phone and turn down the temp when it gets hot at night while sitting in the living room (yes only 10 feet away)!
